Dead Poets Society of America

The Dead Poets Society of America is alive and well. No, not the celluloid classic with Robin Williams, but instead a group of folks who honor American poets who have shuffled off this mortal coil. While these folks may or may not visit coffeehouses and quote (in)famous and obscure poets at the drop of the proverbial hat, they also get out and about, touring a bit like an up-and-coming rock band. Instead of musical venues, these guys “play” at cemeteries, paying observance to final resting places and often commemorating their visits with some tombstone art. For those who think that appreciating Shakespeare or Walt Whitman or Sylvia Plath does not automatically make you a nerd, visit the DPSA.

Selections from the Dream Manual

Selections from the Dream Manual is the magical-art-thoughtchild of Bill Whitcomb and Mike Skrtic. It is beautiful, dream-like, and absorbing. I’m using a small snip of a picture as a teaser. Go see it for yourself.

Stroke of Insight

Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor’s Stroke of Insight is a fascinating and unique viewpoint. What happens when a neuroanatomist studies her own stroke? She encounters nirvana.

Codex Gigas

The Codex Gigas (literally “giant book”) is the largest surviving Medieval manuscript. It measures out at more than 36 inches tall X 19 inches wide X 8 inches thick. It was written by one monk. It contains a complete bible, five long texts and shorter works. The alternative name of The Devil’s Bible comes from the rather large picture of the devil. For more information, see the Swedish museum that houses it. There was also a show on the National Geographic channel you might find interesting.
